The debate over who is the greatest between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo continues, but the ranking difference between the two legends was evident in the latest list published by Daily Mail.
Among the notable absentees from the top 50 was Brazilian star Neymar, despite being Brazil’s all-time top scorer.
Here are the top 10 players in history according to Daily Mail:
10. Cristiano Ronaldo
Controversially, Cristiano Ronaldo, considered by many as the greatest footballer of all time, ranked tenth. Over his career, Ronaldo has won five Ballon d’Or awards and is the all-time leading scorer in football history. At 39, he led Portugal to their first major international titles and holds the record for most international goals with 128. Ronaldo is also the Champions League’s all-time top scorer with 141 goals, winning the trophy five times, including three consecutive titles.
9. Zico
The Brazilian legend Zico takes ninth place. Although he never won a World Cup, he is widely regarded in Brazil as a hero surpassing many other players. Known for his mastery of free kicks, Zico was the star of Brazil’s squad in the 1982 World Cup.
8. Garrincha
Another Brazilian legend, Garrincha, comes in eighth, controversially ahead of Ronaldo and Zico. Widely considered the hero of Brazil’s 1958 World Cup win, he was named the tournament’s best player in 1962, a year when Pelé missed much of the competition due to injury.
7. Ronaldo Nazário
The Brazilian Phenomenon, Ronaldo Nazário, ranks seventh, controversially ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo. A natural talent to behold, he won two Ballon d’Or awards, although his career was severely impacted by injuries.
6. Alfredo Di Stéfano
Alfredo Di Stéfano, Real Madrid’s second-highest scorer after Cristiano Ronaldo, won five European Cups and scored in every final, including a hat-trick in the 1960 final.
5. Zinedine Zidane
Zidane makes the list in fifth place, known for his unmatched ball control across the pitch. He made history by leading France to the 1998 World Cup victory, scoring twice in the final against Brazil, and guided Real Madrid to the Champions League title in 2001/2002.
4. Johan Cruyff
Johan Cruyff, widely regarded as one of football’s greatest minds, missed out on the top three. He is considered the founder of “Total Football,” a tactical approach still seen today through managers like Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta. Cruyff won three consecutive European Cups with Ajax and produced one of football’s most famous moves in the 1974 World Cup against Sweden.
3. Diego Maradona
Diego Maradona’s name is inseparable from the discussion of football’s all-time greats. His 1986 World Cup performance against England remains iconic. Interestingly, many remember his infamous “Hand of God” goal more than his extraordinary solo effort that defined the match.
2. Pelé
Pelé ranks second. The Brazilian legend is the only player to have won three World Cups, first lifting the trophy as a teenager in 1958. Pelé became the iconic captain of Brazil’s greatest football team, leading them to World Cup glory in 1970.
1. Lionel Messi
Argentine superstar Lionel Messi tops the list. Messi holds the record for most Ballon d’Or awards with eight. He has enjoyed one of the greatest careers in football history, winning the Champions League three times with Barcelona and ranking second in the competition’s all-time scoring charts. Messi also led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title, scoring seven goals in the tournament, including four penalties.
